Coal Seam Gas
Gas Production
In order to meet ever growing demand from Asian countries, natural gas production in OECD nations will increase by 5.3 trillion cubic feet from 2007 to 2035, according to research from the Department of Energy. With a production growth rate of 3.5% annually, Australia will increase its production by 2.8 trillion cubic feet and experience the highest growth rate of any nation in the OECD through 2035.
Coal Seam Gas
Queensland Australia is experiencing an unprecedented boom in its Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry. From 2001/02 to 2008/09 the production of CSG in Queensland increased from 15 Bcf to 144 Bcf – an increase of 840% in 7 years. In 2007/08 CSG accounted for 7 percent of Australian gas production, up from 2 percent in 2001/02 and in Queensland CSG now accounts for more than 80% of the gas produced.
Reserves
From an industry that started with no reserves in 1996, the Eastern Australian CSG industry had total reserves of 50 Tcf at the end of 2009. In order to meet the expected demand from the LNG facilities a total of 66 Tcf of gas will be required over the next 20 years.
