Asian gas consumption growth
The region with the fastest growth in natural gas consumption between now and 2035 is projected to be non-OECD Asia, which accounts for 35 percent of the total increment in natural gas use. According to the Department of Energy, the region will nearly double its share of total world natural gas consumption from about 10 percent in 2007 to 18 percent in 2035. Natural gas use in non-OECD Asia increases by an average of 3.5 percent annually through 2035, from 10.5 trillion cubic feet in 2007 to 27.5 trillion cubic feet in 2035.
India and China lead the growth in natural gas demand in non-OECD Asia. In both India and China, natural gas currently is a minor part of the overall energy mix, accounting for only 7 percent and 3 percent, respectively, of total energy consumption in 2007. Those shares are projected to nearly double, adding a combined 10.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas consumption between 2007 and 2035. In the rest of the countries of non-OECD Asia, natural gas consumption is expected to increase by a total of 6.7 trillion cubic feet from 2007 to 2035. During the period Asian demand is expected to increase by 16.9 trillion cubic feet, U.S. gas production is expected to increase by 4.2 trillion cubic feet from 19.1 to 23.3 trillion cubic feet.
